| The day started in Dave's field around 830.
Several of us had met for breakfast prior and as we pulled into the
field we were greeted by several of the Land Cruiser owners. The funny
thing was they were all 80's and Dave's dad made a comment about there
being no 40's. We were soon joined by a 62, G-wagon, Range Rover,
40, a mini and a 4 Runner.
We pretty much all started out of the field together
and the 80's and 62 stuck together all day. First obstacle was Elevator
Shaft and the rock ledge just above the climb. Don quickly found
out that his rear locker was a good investment. Everyone easily
made it up the climb and even over the ledge on top. Most of the
morning was spent on Downward Spiral, Slow-n-Easy and Country Road.
Our group watched some of the hard core guys try out Pinion Twist
with little success and some carnage. Uncle Mike gave Pinion Twist
a quick shot, but it wasn't going to happen. JJG believed he saw
the magic line but only had the street tires on so didn't try.
There wasn't any damage in our group, but we
heard from Dave that the hardcore group had twisted a driveshaft
along with some other damage. Good thing Dave just happened to have
an extra driveshaft on his property.
A quick lunch in the field and our group was
back on trail. Now going up Slow-n-Easy, since we had gone up Downward
Spiral in the morning. We cruised down Downward Spiral and headed
over to the hill climb Gnarly with Rocks. Uncle Mike enjoyed the
climbing over and crushing the fallen trees. Everyone easily made
it up the hill (and that was supposed to be hard?). The rock ledge
at the top was a little difficult, but Alejandro and Uncle Mike
were both able to just climb right over it. Yes folks, lockers and
bigger tires do help! As several folks were waiting for JJG to finish
making mud pies, Don and Uncle Mike just had to go play in the mud.
Some things will never change!
As the day was drawing to a close, the group
headed over to Rock On, which is where the hardcore group had earlier
twisted a drive shaft. We walked the trail with Dave explaining
the various hazards. It looked pretty nasty. Lots of big rocks and
ledges and not straight at all. Dave just had to mention that he
was not aware of any wagons previously being successful, so Uncle
Mike decided to lock it up and try out those new sliders. With Dave
snapping pictures, JJG video and the rest of the group watching
and helping spot, Uncle Mike rocked onto Rock On. After making the
first several obstacles, Uncle Mike could feel the adrenaline flowing
as evidenced by Don hearing him whooping it up. More rocks and off
camber close to some trees and Uncle Mike was ready for the final
test. This involved being off camber, right against some trees with
a gully on the passenger side. With the lockers locked, sliders
welded on, adrenaline flowing, Uncle Mike climbed up and over and
completed Rock On. Everyone whooped it up and high fives were passed
all around. Uncle Mike was just glad to be done, but could not resist
leaving a voicemail for JH rubbing in the fact they were wheeling
and he wasn't. Again, some things will never change.
All had a great time. Some of the highlights
were meeting a new club member, seeing Alejandro's Venezuelan 80,
seeing what skills had been developed since Memorial Day and seeing
if we could impress Dave with the 80's. While a good portion of
what was covered was mild, the group had succeeded on 2 trails that
previously had not seen any 80's be successful.
Of course as with all club events, everyone
continued to hang around, despite the long drive home (for some),
and continue to BS well into the night.
